<em>"Barbara Plett is but a voice to me, but one which stirs deepest emotion over the manner in which it/she was silenced. Background: the BBC runs a weekly radio feature, 'From Our Own Correspondent', affectionately known as 'FOC' to its contributors - a stringing together of intimate personalized pieces from far and wide dealing with the background experiences behind their news reports. OK, so we come to B Plett's capital crime which was to confide in the course of a FOC descriptive piece on Arafat's final exit that the strain the pathos had got to her such that she'd shed a tear - surprised herself, she had. I happened to catch it, the broadcast. Perfectly fine, more than fine, a touch of life-in-the-real imho. Well, it was as if she'd voted for Hitler, denied the Holocaust - indeed by seeking to humanize unspeakable evil she had revealed herself as ... a fellow-traveler, at very least. As I think I mentioned, the ever-vigilant Jewish interest section hereabouts let fly at the Beeb with an orchestrated blitzkrieg of phone calls emails letters of protest [it's a well-practiced routine] and sure enough Plett's transfer to pastures new was shortly announced ... no connection of course, we were hilariously assured ... and no hint of the official Israeli demarche you speak of - no, the Beeb chose to take it in the chin. Compliant, is what you call it. Rather more than that. There is just one govt to which the Beeb grovels and it's not the one in Westminster. I smile sadly whenever Angry Arab fulminates over some bit of NYT bias . Subject him to any day's listening to the BBC domestic service and he'd drop his entire sack of potatoes. ... Yet her [Barbara Plett's] career has to be irredeemably damaged, seems to me. I referred to her being on 'low-key duty' at UNHQ. Well she arrived shortly before the annual GA session and was noticeable only by her absence from the lineup covering that period of high sunspot activity. I'm a few generations out of touch with the Beeb's UN staffing policies but it would appear to this observer to have been using the place for grooming promising youngsters, perhaps on a fast track. Then Pleet turns up. On a fast track backwards? Time will tell."</em>
