The kitchen knives remained in the kitchen until they were removed by the Israelis for a PR photo-shoot. The suggestion that the Israeli commandos did not wish or expect to be involved in a violent clash has no basis in fact: the attack took place at night when it must have been known the muslim majority onboard would have been praying, and the troops were firing bullets, killing their first victim, before they landed on the ship. I, a Scottish atheist and peace activist with no affiliation to I.H.H., was on the Mavi Marmara.
